This month’s winner, MediEvil, is a perfect choice for October! It’s also a great action platformer that’s packed with cool weapons and stages to explore. MediEvil’s story is also cool, because Sir Dan is a humorous underdog, who must prove himself in order to be accepted into the Hall of Heroes. To cement this game’s place in the hall of fame, the devs made excellent use of the PS1’s modest 3D capabilities by giving the game a comical asthetic, so MediEvil has arguably stood the test of time far better than some other games of its time.

Spyro the Dragon is an excellent platforming adventure game for the Sony PlayStation. There’s plenty of stages to explore, great boss fights, and even some puzzles to solve. This game is also a great example of PS1 graphics at their peak.

Widely considered the best of the classic series, Mega Man 2 is a personal favorite of mine. While the first Mega Man is considered a failure, MM2 vastly improved on the basic formula and distinguished itself as what some see as the peak of the series. This game is full of memorable moments and classic bosses. Metal Man, Quick Man, and the Mecha Dragon are some of my favorite bosses in gaming, so give Mega Man 2 a try if you haven’t already! It also has some of the best music on the NES.

July’s Retro Game of the month is Super Metroid for the Super Nintendo; a title that needs little in the way of introduction. With tight action, semi-open world dungeon crawling mechanics, beautiful graphics, and a killer sound track, Super Metroid is arguably the best 2D title in the franchise. It also has a memorable plot and climactic boss battles that cement it firmly in the ranks of the greatest SNES games in general, so give it a try if you have not yet played it!

Pulseman, a rather obscure Sega Channel game, is this month’s winner. It’s not the best Sega Genesis platformer out there, but it has a lot to offer. The hero can shift between the real and digital world, which provides players with quite a bit of variety. He can also perform a variety of stunts, particularly his “Volteccer” dash which damages bad guys and allows Pulseman to cover long distances. Even better, plenty of old fashioned platforming fun to be had.

If there’s one thing that stands out about this game even eight years after I played it, it’s the graphics. Having been made by Game Freak, Pulseman looks a little bit like a Pokémon title. It also features some impressive backgrounds and animations as well as memorable bosses.
