Description
Gunforce II is a sidescrolling shooter developed by Irem. It is one of the last games released by the company. Players control Max and/or Lei as they attempt to save the world from an evil organization called D.A.S. which was a recurring adversary in Irem titles.
This game is split into five sidescrolling missions where players shoot their way through the forces of D.A.S. The heroes will encounter tanks, mechs, helicopters, and a slew of infantrymen as they traverse each level. A “Target” (boss) waits at the end of each mission. Targets have a variety of attacks and can sustain huge amounts of damage before being destroyed.
Gunforce II allows players to aim their character’s guns using the joystick. Both heroes wield two rifles. One fires a rapid stream of bullets while the other rifle has a slower rate of fire. Both standard guns have infinite ammo. Players can also pick up lasers, flamethrowers, and the spread, which is basically a small rocket. Each of the special weapons has a limited ammo supply. The heroes revert to their normal guns once their special weapon’s ammo is used up.
Players can also grab onto ledges and hang from ropes in many missions. Vehicles can be found scattered around the game as well. Hopping into a vehicle allows the player to move around in it and fire its weapons. Many vehicles protect the player from damage until they are destroyed or the player is forced to exit at screen transitions. However, some vehicles offer no cover and the player will die as usual from taking a hit.
Gunforce II allows for single player games and simultaneous two player co-op where one player controls Max and the other Lei. Each coin inserted into the arcade machine grants the player a credit that is equal to two lives. If the player runs out of lives, they can continue if they have credits. Being hit by enemy shots and attacks will kill the player’s character instantly. The player will respawn where he or she died as long as they have extra lives. They can also pick up their special weapon again if they had one when they lost a life.
