MechAssault: Phantom War is a third person Arcade style shooter that takes place in the Battletech universe. Set in the Dark Age, the story revolves around a Lyran Mechwarrior named Vallen who has been tasked with securing an HPG on a secluded world known as Wroclaw. Things take an unexpected turn for the worse when the Lyran force is suddenly betrayed by their allies. Now Vallen and her team must secure the remaining HPG and avenge their fallen comrades.

Players can control mechs from the tabletop game. These mechs include the Uller, Loki, and Mad Cat. Tanks and Battlesuits can also be piloted by the player. Every vehicle is equipped with its own loadout of weapons which range from pulse lasers to PPCs. Many mechs and vehicles have special features like stealth and energy weapon resistance which can be activated for short periods of time.

Hacking is a major feature of MechAssault in addition to combat. Vallen will often have to use her hacking skills to open doors or commandeer mechs. To hack a mech or computer terminal, the player must complete a symbol matching mini-game using the Nintendo DS touch screen.

MechAssault is split into multiple missions which span several planets which have varying environments. Many missions involve destroying hostile mechs, defending allies, and hacking into enemy assets. The game saves automatically when the player completes a mission.

This game features a multi-player mode where players can battle using mechs unlocked in the main campaign.
