Ness and his friends must defeat the evil Giygas and save the universe from destruction in Earthbound, an RPG made for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. This title uses a traditional turn based battle system, but enemies are displayed on the map and can be avoided or caught in a surprise attack if approached from behind. In some cases, battles will end in automatic victory for the player if his or her party is a much higher level than that of the monster. Three of the four playable characters can use magic in the form of psychic powers that range from healing to offensive abilities, while the fourth is able to employ a variety of special weapons. Caves, pyramids, towns, and even the center of the Earth wait to be explored in Earthbound. Players can continue where they left off using the game’s built in save feature.
