Description

Devil May Cry is an action game where players control the demon slayer, Dante. As the son of the legendary demon, Sparda who brought order and justice to the underworld, Dante has pledged to hunt down and destroy all demons. Dante finds himself on a quest when a woman named Trish comes to his office offering him the opportunity to avenge himself against the evil Mundus, who is responsible for the deaths of his mother and brother. The duo travel to Mallet Island, the home of an ancient castle which is believed to to be a gateway to hell. Over the course of his adventure Dante battles Mundus’ servants and uncovers the mystery behind the portal to the underworld along with the secrets of his past.

Devil May Cry focuses on fast paced combat, character progression, light platforming, and a bit of puzzle solving. Dante wields a pair of pistols called Ebony and Ivory along with the Force Sword, a memento of his father. In combat he can alternate between his gun and sword almost instantly. As the game progresses he finds more powerful guns and new melee weapons like the Alastor, a powerful blade.

Some weapons allow Dante to use the Devil Trigger, an ability that unleashes his demonic powers. In devil mode, Dante moves faster, regenerates health, deals extra damage, and gains access to special attacks. However, the energy he uses to power his devil form is finite, so he can only transform for brief periods of time. Players can recharge Dante’s Devil Trigger by attacking monsters.

Dante can learn special skills by spending Red Orbs dropped by enemies at Statues of Divinity or by selecting the Power Up option between missions. These skills are tied to specific weapons and give Dante the ability to double jump or use long range thrusting attacks among other things. Items that increase Dante’s maximum health, extend his Devil Trigger glyphs, heal him, and even grant him extra lives can also be purchased at the shop using Red Orbs.

Mallet Island is a maze-like structure filled with demonic entities, traps, and puzzles. The flow of the game is split into missions where Dante is given specific tasks which include finding objects that unlock doors, defeating bosses, and solving simple puzzles. Upon completing a mission, players are scored according to how much time it took to reach the goal as well as how many Red Orbs they collected. Next, they are then given a rank and extra Red Orbs. The amount of orbs players receive is based on rank. Players are also given an opportunity to save their progress and visit the shop where they can learn new skills and buy items.

Devil May Cry features secret missions where Dante has to complete a challenge in exchange for a Blue Orb Fragment, which can increase his maximum health if he collects four of them. Dante can also purchase entire Blue Orbs as well as Purple Orbs, which add to his Devil Trigger.

Devil May Cry is roughly eight to fifteen hours long. Progress can be saved to the PlayStation 2 memory card between missions. New Game + mode allows players to explore the castle again with all the power ups they collected after beating the final boss.
