Thanks for an Excellent Five Years!

Long ago, a much younger version of myself sat leafing through the pages of the now defunct Nintendo Power magazine thinking “Wow, I would like to do this!”. At the time I was completely unaware of the fact that someday I would eventually build this site, but I already had the idea firmly planted in my mind that I should always be honest, do my best, and remain focused on the games if I ever got into video game writing. Looking back, I have to admit that I’m not perfect and neither is this site, but I’m always striving to improve. None of this is a surprise, but what has shocked me is the positivity and attention RetroMaggedon has received.

When I first started back in early 2016, I wondered if anyone would use my reviews and guides. It seemed absurd to even imagine someone looking up and using something I wrote. Still, if my work helped even one person enjoy a game more, it would have been worth it. The response to this site turned out to be far greater than anything I expected and I have to thank my fellow gamers for making this dream into a reality. After all, there would be no point in making all of this stuff if no one used it. The only way I can ever possibly repay you is to work harder, continue to improve my work, and remain true to my principals, which is exactly what I intend to do over what will hopefully be another thirty years running this project in whatever form it may take as it evolves.

I also want to thank a few of the many people who have put their faith in me by contributing their hard work into this site: Rontro, The Every Gamer, Grawlix, Manhalt, and Cowboy Yojimbo. Without their efforts, RetroMaggedon would not be what it is today.

Temporary Site Outage

We experienced an outage that lasted from Feb. 5, 2021 to Feb. 9, 2021 due to technical problems. Thanks to the efforts of Manhalt, everything is back up and running. I apologize for an inconveniences this may have caused. Unfortunately, it’s necessary to perform maintenance and sometimes things go badly. In the future, I’ll do my best to reduce the amount of downtime RetroMaggedon experiences when something gets borked. Once again, thanks for your patience and extra thanks to Manhalt who go us back on track.

More Cheat Codes and Passwords are on the Way

During the tumult of 2020, I stumbled upon some old gaming magazines and a copy book filled with passwords I took down many years ago. There’s notes and passwords for dozens of games in the copy book and hundreds of codes in the old magazines, so I’ve decided to not let them go to waste. Over the course of the next few years I’m going to post a set of cheats or passwords at least once a week. While there’s a lot of places you can get such materials from, I’ve found that they are not always 100% accurate, which is partly why I’ve decided to test all of the codes/passwords I have at my disposal. It’s difficult to judge what games people are most interested in at times, so if there’s a title you would like to see covered on this site, let me know in the comments below and I’ll do my best to oblige. I will also continue to work on guides and reviews as usual.

Finally added a Game Boy section.

RetroMaggedon has been around for nearly five years now, but I haven’t gotten around to covering any games for the classic handheld. Thanks to the efforts of Rontro, a long time contributor and friend of this project, we now have a Game Boy section and will be adding to it over the coming days and weeks. That said, much of the content in this section will be cheat codes and passwords until I get an opportunity to cover some games in depth. The Game Boy section can be accessed via the Games by System category on the navigation bar or by clicking the link below.

Thanks again Rontro!

RetroMaggedon 2019-2020 Logo

The site has a new logo to celebrate our coverage of the classic NES RPG, Final Fantasy. It is stylized after the Final Fantasy Origins title screen (which I will hopefully get around to working soon) and was created by my oldest daughter, who has done an excellent job. Special thanks to her and I hope everyone who visits RetroMaggedon enjoys it.

Introducing Quick Reviews

In an effort to streamline my reviews, I’ve decided to include the score and a list of important points about the game along with my standard in depth review. I’m also going to try to shorten the overall length of my reviews, because after covering roughly 75 titles, I often feel like I’m repeating myself and I do not want these reviews to become boring for me or the reader. With that said, this only applies to my reviews and not those of others who write for this site, since they have their own styles, which I feel are best left alone. Finally, I’m looking for ways to make my walkthroughs more convenient for visitors. Currently, I try to outline everything in a table of contents as well as place the actual walkthrough at or near the beginning, so readers do not have to scroll through pages of basic info to get to what they need. In the future I may end up splitting walkthroughs into sections.

Comments Enabled!

Our comments section has been closed for two years due to technical difficulties. I’ve recently found the time to fix the problem and all visitors are welcome to share their thoughts, criticisms, observations, and feelings here on RetroMaggedon.com. Right now the system is rather stripped down, but this is something of a beta run and improvements will be implemented over time. Special thanks to our first poster who has shared some helpful Shatterhand secrets that I missed when I wrote the short guide for it. I also apologize to guests who have been unable to comment until now. Feedback is very important to me (and everyone else involved in this project) and I look forward to input from our users.
