Description
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City places players in control of Tommy Vercetti, a mafioso who has just been released from a fifteen year prison sentence. Tommy travels to Vice City at the command of his boss to complete a deal, but things go horribly wrong when he is ambushed and robbed by a local gang of thugs. Now Tommy is alone in Vice City and owes the mafia a huge amount of money. Luckily, Florida’s most corrupt town is full of opportunities for a dangerous felon like Tommy.
Vice City is a 3D sandbox game where players complete missions given by NPCs. Missions can range from simply driving someone from Point A to Point B to complicated bank heists. Players are given money upon completing a mission successfully. Completing missions can also open up new contacts and award players with access to new weapons and vehicles.
As in all Grand Theft Auto games, players can steal cars and openly commit crimes. Breaking the law, particularly while in sight of the cops, will result in the player gaining a “Wanted Level”. While wanted, the player will actively be pursued by law enforcement. Committing further crimes will escalate the player’s Wanted Level. At one star (stars are used to indicate the player’s Wanted Level) the player may be arrested by nearby police, but will not be actively pursued. At two stars the cops will chase the player around town until he or she finds bribes to pay them off or uses a Pay ‘N Spray while in a vehicle. More powerful forms of law enforcement, including SWAT Teams and the FBI, will get involved as the player accrues Wanted Stars. If captured, Tommy will respawn at the Police Station without his weapons. He will also have to pay a bribe to the cops to be released.
Tommy has a limited amount of Health and will end up in the hospital if his life goes down to zero. All of Tommy’s weapons will be confiscated by the hospital and he will have to pay a fee for treatment. Being punched, shot, or blown up will reduce Tommy’s Health. Falling from great heights, falling in water, or being in a vehicle when it explodes will result in instant death.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is about forty hours long. Many of the vehicles and weapons it features were new to the series. These include motor cycles, airplanes, and mini-guns. Players can also purchase property, which is another one of Vice City’s innovations. Tommy can own several Safe Houses where he can change his clothes and save progress using the PS2’s memory card.
