Description
James Sutherland believed his wife, Mary, had died of an illness three years ago until he received a mysterious letter bearing her name. The letter told James to go to Silent Hill and look for Mary, who would be waiting for him in their favorite place. Baffled by this strange turn of events, James drives out to Silent Hill in search of his wife or the impostor using her name. Will he find her or does something far darker than his deceased wife await him in the foggy town?
Silent Hill 2 is a survival horror game where players control James as he searches a seemingly haunted town for his wife. On his journey James will encounter monsters and the deadly Pyramid Head, a huge sword wielding executioner. He will also have to brave an abandoned apartment building, a hospital, and other places which are infested with murderous creatures.
Many locations feature puzzles that must be solved to reveal new pathways and useful tools. Puzzles often feature riddles that act as clues players can use to solve them. Other puzzles require players to use special items in a creative manner.
James will find ammo and healing items as he explores the town. However, resources are finite, so players must use them carefully. Over the course of the game James will also find weapons he can use to defeat monsters. These weapons include a steel pipe, a handgun, and a shotgun. While James can use weapons to defend himself, he lacks formal training. Consequently, players have to give James time to wind up melee attacks and aim firearms or he may miss his targets.
Monsters in Silent Hill 2 cause radio interference and can be located using a portable radio. James also needs a light to see in the gloomy town. However, monsters can hear the radio static and see James’ flashlight, so players must choose between being able to detect threats and the ability to move stealthily.
Silent Hill 2 features multiple difficulty modes as well as endings which vary depending on the player’s actions. Players can also unlock special weapons and items by completing the game and replaying it on the same save file. There are also two scenarios, each with their own stories and puzzles. The main scenario is Letter From Silent Heaven, where players control James. The second is a shorter story where players control another character.
