Description
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is a direct sequel to Blood Omen that takes place 1500 years after the first game. Kain has conquered Nosgoth and commands a legion of vampires. These vampires acquire new powers every so often with Kain being the first to receive a gift each cycle. Eventually, Azreal (one of Kain’s lieutenants) evolves before his master. Fearful of Azreal’s new found power, Kain orders him thrown into the abyss. Azreal is destroyed as he sinks to the bottom of the abyss, but is revived as a wraith by The Elder God. As a wraith, Azreal must avenge himself and destroy Kain, whose vampire empire has disrupted the natural order.
Soul Reaver features fully 3D, exploration based gameplay where players control Azreal. Players must explore Nosgoth to find new powers and defeat the vampire lieutenants as well as Kain himself. On his quest, Azreal will learn spells and acquire the mighty Soul Reaver sword. Azreal must consume souls to maintain his physical form and will lose energy when he is struck by an enemy. He will also lose energy over time, so defeating enemies and feeding on their essence is a major aspect of the game. Run out of energy and you will have to return to the spirit realm where you can restore Azreal’s power.
Azreal can use his claws as a weapon as well as the mighty Soul Reaver. He can also use various weapons scattered around the game, though these are only temporary tools. Platforming and puzzle solving are also important aspects of the game. Players will often have to glide and climb to hidden places to find switches, power ups, or the way to the next area.
