Description

StarTropics takes place in the modern world where players control a teenager named Mike Jones who is on a trip to visit his uncle who works as an archaeologist on a remote island. Mike soon learns that his uncle is missing after talking to the villagers on C-Island. The island has also been plagued by monsters as of late. As a star athlete, Mike is the only person capable of finding his uncle, so he sets out to battle monsters and explore dungeons with a yoyo given to him by the village chief.

Much of StarTropics revolves around exploring tunnels and ruins that are packed with monsters as well as traps. Mike will have to rely on the yoyo to slay the beasts that have been attacking the island, but he can upgrade it to a more powerful weapon as the story progresses. Special weapons like the baseball bat, laser, and bola can also be collected in dungeons, but these have limited ammo and disappear after Mike leaves the area.

Puzzle solving and platforming are also huge parts of the game. Players will have to search carefully for switches and secret passages if they hope to find their way through any of the mazes that Mike must explore. Traps are also prominent in this game with sinking platforms, deadly pits, and arrows that fire from walls being quite common.
