Description
God of War: Chains of Olympus is a prequel to the first game in the series. The story begins with Kratos fighting the Persians who are invading Attica. He soon learns that there is a greater danger when Helios, the god of light, falls from the sky in his great chariot. Kratos is commanded to rescue Helios and save the world from the encroaching darkness of Morpheus, whose power has grown stronger with Helios gone.
Combat is the primary focus of this game, with Kratos wielding his whip-like Blades of Chaos against a variety of creatures from Greek mythology. Players can perform a wide array of combination attacks using Light and heavy moves as well as grapple enemies. Kratos can block, parry, roll, and jump to defend himself from enemy attacks. Magic spells are also acquired as the game progresses.
Defeating enemies will grant players Red Orbs which can be used to upgrade Kratos’s weapons and spells. Powering up a weapon or spell will often increase its damage and unlock new skills.
Kratos has a health meter and will die if he runs out of life as a result of getting hit too much by enemies and/or dangerous objects. Falling into chasms is lethal as well. If the player dies, he or she can restart from a checkpoint or load a saved game. Kratos also has a magic meter that decreases as he casts spells. Opening green and blue chests will replenish his life and magic. Gorgon Eyes and Phoenix Feathers, that increase Kratos’s maximum health and life respectively, can be found hidden throughout the game. It takes five of each item to increase the meter it is associated with.
Quick time events where players have to push certain buttons when prompted are also a big part of the game. These events often take place during combat and involve Kratos finishing off a boss in a cinematic scene, but they can also apply to actions like toppling pillars and opening huge doors.
Some sections of the game require the player to solve a puzzle in order to move forward. These puzzles often involve flipping switches, pushing blocks, or turning cranks, but a few use other mechanics. While there are quite a few puzzles to solve, they are not a major focus of the game and are not terribly complex.
God of War: Chains of Olympus uses a save feature where players can record their progress at certain points and continue later on. There are several difficulty levels the player can choose from at the start of the game. They range from very easy to hard with the highest difficulty only becoming available after completing the game.
