Description
In Darkstone, players control a lone hero who must gather six magical crystals and use them to defeat the evil sorcerer, Draak. A difficult journey awaits the hero, because Draak’s armies control much of the world of Uma and each crystal is sealed away in one of six dungeons. Draak himself can turn into a dragon and only the mighty Time Orb, which is formed from the crystals, can defeat him. Luckily, the good wizard, Sebastian, and the townspeople who live in Uma’s central hub are there to help the hero out.
Players can choose a character from one of eight classes: Warrior, Amazon, Wizard, Sorceress, Thief, Assassin, Priestess, and Monk. While there are eight classes, half of them only differ in terms of gender, so there are essentially four with the Warrior/Amazon being melee fighters, Wizard/Sorceress as mages, Thief/Assassin taking the role of ranged attackers, and the Monk/Priestess acting as magic wielding fighters. Each of the four base classes has its own special weapons and armor that suit their roles. For example, warriors can use large two-handed axes and heavy armor, while thieves use weapons like bows. Any class can learn any type of magic and use equipment from other classes, but they must be able to meet the stat requirements associated with equipment.
Players have access to a variety of spells that include Light, Healing, Magic Missile, and even poison gas clouds, which can be obtained by reading spell books. Every class also has a set of skills that can be trained in exchange for gold. These skills allow players to detect traps, identify items, and boost their stats in combat to name just a few of the possibilities.
Exploring dungeons is a huge part of Darkstone’s gameplay since all of the crystals the hero must collect are hidden in dungeons. Each dungeon is located in a different region of the overworld and has a quest associated with it. These quests are randomly chosen from a pre-made list and completing them is often a prerequisite for acquiring a crystal. The objectives of the quests can vary greatly. For some quests, players may simply have to rescue an NPC or solve a puzzle, while other quests require players to defeat a powerful boss. Gather all of the crystals and the hero will be able to reassemble the Time Orb, then battle Draak toe to toe in his lair.
