Description

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow is an Action RPG and platformer typically described as “Metroidvania”. Players control Soma Cruz who finds himself back at what appears to be Dracula’s Castle after being attacked by a mysterious cult, which is in search of a new Dark Lord. Soma must solve the mystery of the castle while confronting the cultists.

Dawn of Sorrow features traditional side scrolling action where players must battle monsters, hop over obstacles, and explore various parts of the cult’s castle which is a copy of Dracula’s lair. The game’s ARPG elements include an experience based level system, various pieces of equipment, and Soma’s unique Power of Dominance, which allows him to absorb enemy souls. Defeating monsters will sometimes yield a soul that Soma can use as a weapon. These souls can be equipped like weapons and armor. Souls have various effects; for example the Skeleton Soul allows Soma to throw bones like a Skeleton and the Golem Soul increases Soma’s strength stat.

Much of the castle is inaccessible in the beginning and players will have to find new powers or solve puzzles to open up new areas. Players must also learn to draw “Magic Seals” on the DS touch screen after defeating a boss to finish it off permanently.

Completing the game will unlock new game modes that include a Boss Rush and Julius Mode, which allows the player to control Julius Belmont instead of Soma. There is also a two player mode where players can race each other to complete a premade stage.
