Battletoads (NES) Cheats and Tricks
5 Toads Code
To begin the game with 5 extra lives instead of the usual 3, press and hold A, B, Down, and then Start on the Title Screen.
1-Up Grinding
You will see a 1-Up and a shark after the final checkpoint in Stage 9: Terra Tubes. It is possible to gain a ton of extra lives by collecting the 1-Up, killing the shark with big toad punches, then purposely dying so you can repeat the process. You will earn 2,000 points every time you hit the shark for a grand total of 16,000 points per loop. Players are awarded an extra life for every 100,000 points they earn, so it is possible to stock up on lives with a bit of patience using this trick.
Stage Warps
There are several stage warps scattered around Battletoads. These warps can allow you to bypass difficult areas or merely act as a means of continuing your game. Most of the warps are hard to reach as they vanish after a few seconds and often require the player to clear dangerous spots.
Level 1 to Level 3 Warp Point
Quickly kill the first two pigs in Stage 1 with Battletoad Butts and run right until see a glimmer of white light on the ledge. You will warp to Stage 3 if you manage to jump into the glimmer before it disappears.
Level 3 to Level 5 Warp Point
This warp is in the infamous Turbo Tunnel. Ride your bike until you get to the fifth round and count the walls as you go. Purposely aim for the tenth wall as if you were to ram into it and a warp will appear at the last second. Enter the warp to go to Stage 5.
Note: This warp is extremely dangerous to use due to the careful timing required to enter it.
Level 4 to Level 6 Warp Point
Look for a brown platform that drops then rises back up again near the end of Stage 4. Ride this platform about halfway down and you should see the warp flicker into existence just above you. Hop into it to go to Stage 6.
Level 6 to Level 8 Warp Point
Jump onto the head of the big snake at the start of the second part of Stage 6 and ride it past some floating spikes. Drop down and to the right to land on solid ground with a warp to Stage 8. This one is difficult to pull off and you have to be very fast to get to it before it disappears.
