Description
Dante’s Inferno is a 2010 port of the Xbox360 game of the same name. This game is based on Dante’s Divine Comedy and features many familiar places, characters, and themes from the epic as well as direct quotes. Players control Dante, a fallen crusader who ventures through the Nine Circles of Hell to save his wife, Beatrice. Over the course of his journey, Dante will encounter many famous figures from mythology and history.
Dante has access to two primary weapons: Death’s Scythe and Beatrice’s Cross. The scythe is a close quarters weapon while the cross is effective at long range. Both weapons become stronger as the player punishes or absolves the people and creatures he encounters in Hell. Punishing a creature increases Dante’s Unholy Level, powering up his scythe and unlocking new moves for it. The cross is powered up by absolving creatures, which also unlocks new moves. Players will have to collect souls by defeating enemies and finding certain items to purchase new skills once they have been unlocked.
Dante also learns spells as he ventures through Hell and defeats bosses. Spells require mana to use, but often deal high damage to large groups of enemies. Some spells can be upgraded via the Unholy and Holy skill trees.
Platforming plays a major role in this game. Dante can jump and double jump to reach high places or perform aerial attacks. He can also climb walls, poles, rappel from ropes, and swing from hooks using Death’s Scythe which extends to latch onto things. Falling into pits, rivers of lava, and other hazards will result in instant death.
Dante has a health bar that is depleted when an enemy hits him or if he touches certain dangerous surfaces and objects. Health can be refilled in small amounts by defeating enemies and by using health fountains scattered around Hell.
Dante’s Inferno features a number of puzzles and mini-games. Most puzzles involve turning cranks to move platforms and/or pushing blocks. Players often have to complete button pushing mini-games in the form of quick time events to finish off bosses and some lesser demons.
Secrets can be uncovered by exploring areas carefully. Some places conceal extra souls, people who can be absolved or punished for experience, and Judas Coins. There are a total of 30 Judas Coins in the game. Collecting them will award the player with extra souls for every 5 Coins, but they do not yield anything special aside from souls.
Players can save their game at Beatrice Statues. Finally, completing the game will unlock New Game + as well as Inferno Difficulty.
