Description

Steel Empire is a 1992 shmup for the Genesis. It takes place in an alternate timeline where steam powered flying machines rule the skies. Two forces, the Motorhead Empire and the Republic of Silverhead clash in a war that will decide the fate of the world. The Silverhead Republic has recently invented a mighty weapon (known as the Lightning Bomb) that can change the course of the war in their favor. As a Silverhead Republic pilot, players can control the Stryker airplane or the Zep-01 Zeppelin in seven stages.

Each aircraft has its own unique abilities. The Stryker is fast, small, and capable of launching bombs that can destroy ground targets, but it is also fragile. The Zep-01 is larger and slower, but more sturdy. It can also release charges that deal extra damage to arial foes. Both aircraft can get smaller craft that assist with extra firepower. Destroying special supply balloons can grant players experience that can power up the player’s main weapons and money that can be used to buy upgrades.

As a shooter, Steel Empire has players blasting their way through stages and fighting large bosses at the end of each stage. The player’s aircraft can take multiple hits before crashing, though how much damage it can sustain depends on its make and upgrades. Players can also deploy Lightning Bombs to clear the screen of enemies.
