Undercover Cops is a 1992 Beat ’em Up created by Irem. Players control a special task force assembled to put a stop to a crime wave that is threatening to destroy the city. This team consists of Claude a karate master who was imprisoned for accidentally killing someone in a fight, Bubba the ex-football player, and Flame a vigilante who is out to avenge her fallen partner. Together, they are known as The City Sweepers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In usual Beat ’em Up fashion players will punch, kick, and throw their way through five stages packed with thugs. A boss who must be defeated in order for players to progress waits at the end of each stage. Bosses have extra health and a repertoire of special moves, which make them more deadly than regular foes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each of the City Sweepers has a suite of their own special moves. These include kicks, punches, throws, charging attacks, jumping attacks, and a special “Desperate Move” that inflicts extra damage at the cost of health. They also differ in speed and fighting style. Claude uses long reaching kicks and is in the middle of the pack in terms of speed as well as power. Bubba is slow, but his attacks crush opponents. Speed is the name of the game with Flame, but her attacks lack power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Players get two lives per coin and will have to feed the machine more coins to continue if they run out of attempts. Food that heals the player can be found at various points in each stage, but it becomes more scarce as the player progresses. Makeshift weapons like steel beams and flaming chunks of wood can be picked up and used to bash bad guys. These weapons do extra damage, but have a limited number of uses before they break. One or two players can challenge Undercover Cops, which takes thirty to forty minutes to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
