To some people, this RPG is dense, pompous, and nearly impossible. To others it’s a masterwork. I fall into the latter camp as you may have guessed. I’m also well aware of all of the complaints about difficult crafting systems, complex combat mechanics, and story that takes itself too seriously.

So why is Vagrant Story so great if it has all these issues? Well, developers have gone out of their way to make products with mass appeal for many years now, even in the days of the PlayStation. Vagrant Story on the other hand, was not made for everyone, it’s someone’s vision. It dares to challenge players to find novel solutions to problems and dumps them in a world where they have to figure things out for themselves. Sure, it has a weird name and can be unapproachable for some, but I got a tremendous amount of entertainment out of it, even after beating it. In fact, I’d say Vagrant Story really takes off on New Game + when Ashley already has a decent weapon and some stats.

Edward Scissor Hands, is that you?

Maybe Vagrant Story is right for you, maybe it is not. Regardless, I’ll explain my reasons for loving this game and why it’s worth a try in this review.

Story

The story is very vague at times, which can be off-putting to some players. At the start, we are given a brief bit of text explaining that the manor of a Duke, whose name I won’t attempt to spell, is being sacked by a group of cultists led by a guy named Sidney. While Sidney hardly sounds like the name of a cult leader, he certainly looks the part with his metal arms (how does he scratch his nose?) and the trailing skirt thing he wears. The cultists kidnap the duke’s son, but they are actually searching for a “key” which becomes more important as the game progresses.

The situation becomes increasingly complicated as the Crimson Blades, a sort of Knights Templar group, attack the cultists and Ashley Riot (the main character) infiltrates the manor on behalf of the government. All of this is going on while the mansion is burning by the way.

The cultists flee to the abandoned city of Lea Monde, young dukeling in tow and with the Blades in hot pursuit. Ashley and his partner, Merlose, follow close behind. Things really start to go awry when they enter the city and find it infested with undead and all manor of evil creatures. Merlose and Ashley get separated early on, after that the game focuses on Ashley, whom players control for its duration.

Right away, we see a lot of different players with their own backgrounds, factions, and agendas. This alone can be confusing for new players. A cut scene that further explains the premise runs if you wait before starting the game, but you’ll have to use a lot of context clues and imagination to fill in the gaps. This is also one of those games whose story becomes far more clear after you finish it.

And that’s where the brilliance of Vagrant Story comes in. It’s not afraid to challenge the audience and present them with riddles sprinkled with a smattering of unreliable information from dubious characters. It’s often hard to tell who is on what side, let alone their intentions, yet it all comes together in a series of brilliant flashes near the climax. I still have some questions about the story, even after twenty-six years and multiple playthroughs, which goes to door l show how deep the lore runs.

Like I said, I can see how the story may bore or even intimidate some players. It may seem stupid if you take it at face value and it certainly comes off as pretentious as characters spout literary quotes and use pseudo-Elizabethan language…hmm, now I sound pretentious! At the same time, it will certainly appeal to anyone looking for something a bit different and more mature than your usual “unassuming youth becomes a hero and saves the world” plot.

On a final note, Vagrant Story was made by the director who created Final Fantasy Tactics (a favorite of mine) and it takes place in the same world, though I’m uncertain about the timeline. It even starts with a quote from A.J. Durai, who should be familiar to anyone who played Tactics. It’s no surprise the story is full of political intrigue, literary allusions, and mysticism considering its lineage.

Graphics

Vagrant Story may very well have the very best 3D graphics on the PS1. If not, it’s in the top ten. The character models and environments push the bounds of what the PlayStation could do and you’ll see some truly breathtaking scenes as you explore the lost city. It also has a very distinctive art style that’s reminiscent of Final Fantasy Tactics, which is both a strength and a weakness.

The monsters, bosses, and environments all look great. There was a bit of asset recycling, since Ashley will visit areas that use the same textures a number of times, but I’ll give Square a pass since it makes the world feel more immersive. Just about everything is 3D and the game runs pretty smoothly, which is a real accomplishment on the PS1. This was likely achieved by keeping the spaces where the action takes place very small. Just about everything is split into rooms that have to load when entered. Luckily, these rooms load fairly quickly due to their compact size.

Ashley can use no less than eight different weapon types. All weapons have their own models which change as the player finds new ones or upgrades them, so a scimitar looks different from a shortsword when equipped even though they are both one-handed swords. The weapons look great in an exaggerated fantasy game sense.

Magic and special ability effects are also really beautiful. The game features a variety of spells, some of which look they could have been on a low end PS2 game. Enemies also have flashy special attacks and Ashley learns equally flashy Break Arts as he goes.

I was blown away by the graphics, but I will say I didn’t like many of the character models. They are too modern and often just strange looking. While Sidney with his metal limbs is cool, Ashley and many others look like rejects from a third rate wrestling league.

Ashley is the worst of the bunch. He has these weird metal shield gloves that look like they’d get in the way of combat. His hair is split into ponytails that resemble antennae, plus Ashley wears a tank-top and chaps over a speedo. I don’t really care if game devs want to go full Conan the Barbarian style fantasy and have everyone running around in their skivvies, but they could at least have made clothes that didn’t look stupid.

I’m gonna be honest, I almost passed on this game when I saw the box art with Ashley looking like a cricket in a tank top years ago. At the same time, the strange character design made me pick the box up, so I guess they did something right.

Now that’s cool!

Gameplay

Nearly, the entire game takes place in the ruins of Lea Monde, though that’s not entirely unusual for an RPG. Though set in a single city, Vagrant Story has a variety of areas to explore. Ashley will visit a huge wine cellar, a crypt, mines, a forest, and the city’s forgotten underworld to name a few locations. Most rooms are guarded by monsters, which must be dealt with Or simply fled from in many cases. Some chambers have relatively simple block sliding puzzles that must be solved in order to move forward. Treasure chests containing weapons, potions, and spell books can be found in various places, so exploration is often rewarding.

All in all, Vagrant Story’s dungeon design is very good. Lea Monde feels like a place that could have existed, while serving as an entertaining and sometimes challenging dungeon. There are even areas that are sealed until New Game + where players can replay the game while keeping much of Ashley’s stuff. Years ago I played through this game about four times in a row and only put it down because, a title I had been waiting for had been released.

I really love Vagrant Story, but I have to admit its combat mechanics are so arcane that even experienced RPG fans will spend some time adjusting to them. There’s nothing quite like Vagrant Story in terms of combat design as far as I know. Many players may find themselves suddenly facing opponents they cannot harm and find themselves stumped. I know I spent much of my first play through carrying around several weapons that I would swap between in hopes of damaging bosses.

Unlike other RPGs, Vagrant Story doesn’t just calculate Ashley’s strength plus his weapon damage versus the target’s defense to get a number. Instead, it takes Ashley’s strength, the weapon’s strength, enemy’s type, the highest elemental score on the weapon, and the weapon’s damage type (blunt, edge, or pierce) into account, then weighs it against the enemy’s elemental defense, strength, and type defense to get a damage total. If that sounds confusing, it’s because it is confusing. In fact, I didn’t even name all of the factors or fully explain the system, because I don’t want this review to be a mile long.

Things get really complicated when you find out Ashley doesn’t level up through experience like most other RPGs. Instead, he’s awarded small stat boosts from consumable items and after defeating bosses. His weapons and armor also get stronger against certain enemy types as he fights them, which opens up a whole other can of worms because, crafted weapons and armor are combined to create new ones which inherit the stats of the weapons/armor used to make them. Confused yet? And, yes, there’s a crafting system as I mentioned before and it’s ridiculously complicated like everything else.

Vagrant Story gets a lot of heat for being so intricate and I understand why; I too, found it very frustrating at first. But it’s also very rewarding once you learn it and the system isn’t too bad if you plan out what you want to make. It only gets tedious if you try to make a really fancy weapon like a staff or crossbow. Most players can make themselves a powerful, yet simple weapon without too much effort. It also helps to use an online guide for pointers.

Guess I’ll add a few more layers of complexity onto this cake and talk about Ashley’s special abilities. On top of all the mechanics I talked about AND a spell system that I haven’t really mentioned (it’s mostly just attack, healing, and buff spells, we’ll leave it at that) there’s Ashley’s Break Arts and Chain Skills.

Ashley learns Chain Skills after the first boss. They allow him to basically freeze time and attack enemies repeatedly. That said they work like a rhythm game, so players have to press the Circle, Triangle, or Square button when an “!” appears above Ashley’s head during an attack to get a chain to work. Chain Skills can deal extra damage, refill Ashley’s health, and even inflict status ailments. It’s a cool system that makes the game more exciting and easier if you know how to take advantage of it. In fact, Ashley’s inability to damage certain foes becomes less of a problem if you are good at chaining attacks because, chain damage is cumulative.

Ashley also learns defensive skills that can reduce or reflect various types of damage. They work much like Chain Skills, except the player has to hit a button when Ashley is attacked. Once again, clever players can leverage this mechanism to harm enemies who would otherwise be immune to Ashley’s attacks.

Break Arts are a lot more simple than Ashley’s other abilities. There are about four Break Arts for every weapon type. Defeating set amounts of enemies unlocks a Break Art for the equipped weapon. All the player has to do is select the Break Art option from the menu and choose the one they want to use. Break Arts add elemental damage and pack an extra punch at the cost of some of Ashley’s HP. Some of them even inflict negative status.

Have fun beating on this punching bag.

Guess what!? There’s ANOTHER system to talk about. At this point I feel like I’m writing a walkthrough and not a review, but this stuff is probably relevant to anyone interested in the game. Ashley accrues something called Risk when executing an attack. It basically represents his focus, or lack thereof. Higher Risk scores decrease Ashley’s chance to hit an enemy and lowers his defense, so managing it is important. Unfortunately, this means chugging Risk reducing potions, which gets tiresome after a while.

We’re so deep in the weeds now I’m not sure I talked about all the different types of weapons our hero can use. There’s just about any weapon type you can think of from great axes to daggers and they all have characteristics that make them worth using depending on what the player wants. You want something that can hit enemies before they reach you? Use a crossbow. You want something that will (hopefully) one-shot one of those pesky knights? Use a great sword. Players who prefer safety may opt to use a sword and shield for extra defense. There’s something for everyone when it comes to weapons, which I think is one of this game’s greatest strengths.

Vagrant Story can be quite fun once you get beyond the learning curve. Boss fights are plentiful and feel dramatic, especially since many bosses can fry Ashley in a couple of hits. Exploration is rewarding as players will find all sorts of goodies stashed away. The game also flows very naturally as the player explores the city.

User Interface

Using menus and swapping items into/out of storage gets to be a headache. If you plan on making equipment, you’re gonna have to hoard stuff and fiddle around with the storage chest because, Vagrant Story only let’s Ashley carry so much stuff. You may also find yourself changing weapons a lot until you have an “ultimate” weapon that works reasonably well on everything.

If this RPG can be said to have a failing, it’s certainly the frustration inducing inventory system. While the things I just mentioned are bad, it gets worse. The game has to save and load whenever the player accesses the storage container. This is the only PS1 game I’ve seen do this and, trust me, it’s painful. I suppose all those fancy combat mechanics didn’t leave enough space in RAM for Ashley’s inventory.

There are a few bright spots in the UI despite its awful inventory system. Ashley is very easy to control with the D-Pad (no tank controls here!) and the button setup is quite intuitive. They also added a quick menu that makes casting spells, using items, and performing other actions a bit more convenient.

Yes, this is as complicated as it looks, if not more so.

Music and Sound

Ummm…I think there’s music in this game. Seriously, the soundtrack is very minimalistic. There’s a main theme song and a few very well done tracks that will give Final Fantasy Tactics fans flashbacks, but not much else.

Vagrant story has a really nice suite of sound effects, however. Even now I can hear the sound of Ashley whacking a training dummy or executing one of his chain attacks… maybe I should talk to my doctor about that. There’s no real voice acting aside from some grunts and “oofs” which is probably for the better: I’m not sure how well the script would work if read aloud.

Final Thoughts

I spent a lot of this review just trying to explain how Vagrant Story works, which probably isn’t a great argument for why someone should play it. As I said, it’s not a game for everyone. Hardcore RPG fans looking for something different may appreciate it though. I know I fell into that camp when I bought it twenty-six years ago. In spite of the steep learning curve and menus that get in the way of the fun, there’s an excellent game waiting in Vagrant Story for anyone with the patience to uncover it.

Thank you for checking out my Vagrant Story review!

RetroMaggedon.com ©2026

Vagrant Story Review (PlayStation) Vagrant Story Home Page PlayStation Game Catalog Awful Name, Great Game ~by tankMage (August 2026) Score: 93/100 (Excellent) Vagrant Story is a somewhat divisive game among RPG fans.
