Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin places players in control of Jonathan and Charlotte, two monster hunters, as they investigate the reappearance of Dracula’s Castle. The duo soon encounters a powerful vampire named Brauner who has taken control of the castle using magical paintings to seal away Dracula\u2019s power. They also meet a mysterious ghost named Wind who offers to assist them throughout their adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like most “Metroidvania” games, Portrait of Ruin emphasizes exploration. Players can only investigate small sections of the castle at first, but they will earn new abilities as they defeat bosses. In turn, this allows them to to visit new places by turning by doing things like into a toad and squeezing through small spaces or moving obstacles by working together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In traditional RPG fashion, the heroes will level up and become stronger as they defeat monsters. Players will find a huge assortment of items as they explore the castle. Many of the game’s weapons, armor, and accessories can be purchased at a shop near the castle entrance. Other items are dropped by defeated monsters and even found hidden in walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both heroes have their own talents, which set them apart from each other. Jonathan is a powerful fighter who can use a variety of weapons which include swords, whips, axes, and spears, while Charlotte can use magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portrait of Ruin is novel, because players can switch between Jonathan and Charlotte as well as have both characters active at the same time, though the computer will control one of the active character if both have been selected. Jonathan and Charlotte learn a variety of abilities which allow them to overcome challenges together and even acquire powerful spells they can cast as a team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike other Metroidvania games, players will visit a number of unique areas by entering Brauner’s paintings. These areas are often themed after places that would not match the setting of the castle under normal circumstances. Each painting is home to a powerful boss monster that must be defeated in order to progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portrait of Ruin is about 20 to 30 hours long, depending on how much time the player invests in collecting items. It features multiple endings as well as a secret bonus dungeon. Progress can be saved at statues found in the castle or the game can be saved temporarily by using the suspend feature in the in-game menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
