Grim Dawn is set in the world of Cairn where humanity is under siege by creatures from another dimension. These creatures, known as Aetherials, entered Cairn through portals opened by human scientists. Using these portals, the Aetherials possessed masses of humans and waged a war that caused tremendous casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The player controls a character who was formerly possessed by an Aetherial, but was freed using an experimental process that left him or her with the ability to use Rift Gates. These gates are scattered around Cairn and can be used as a means of rapid transport. Now, the hero must use his or her powers to aid a small group of survivors who have entrenched themselves in an old prison called Devil’s Crossing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an ARPG, Grim Dawn has players battling monsters in real time. Dodging powerful attacks by running or dashing out of the way is a major aspect of gameplay along with character building and upgrading equipment. Players can choose a Mastery when their character reaches level 2. Masteries are basically classes which focus on various abilities. These abilities allow players to use devastating spells and melee attacks, boost their stats, and provide various defenses. To improve a Mastery, the player must allocate skill points, which are awarded every time he or she levels up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon reaching level 10, players can choose a second Mastery to combine with their current one. This second Mastery is optional and can be developed as the player wishes. Players can reallocate skill points by visiting an NPC at Devil’s Crossing and paying a small fee. There are currently 9 Masteries to choose from. The first 6 are included in the base game, while the other 3 come with the Forgotten Gods and Ashes of Malmouth expansions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Players can further customize their heroes using Devotion points which are obtained by discovering and cleansing shrines hidden throughout the game. To cleanse a shrine, the player must offer an item or defeat a group of monsters that have infested it. Devotion points can be used to activate stars on the Devotion screen. These stars gift the player with various status buffs and abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Players will also unlock a crafting system which allows them to create random or semi-random items as well as components that can be used to enhance equipment. Crafting recipes are unlocked by gaining levels and finding scrolls that are occasionally dropped by monsters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world of Cairn is quite large and filled with monsters to battle. As players explore, they will encounter powerful bosses, hidden items, and enclaves of friendly NPCs. Such NPCs often sell useful pieces of equipment and issue quests that award players with Exp as well as money upon completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grim Dawn offers players a number of game modes. These include Normal, Veteran, Elite, and Ultimate difficulty, which determine the power level of the monsters the player must fight. Normal mode is the easiest, while Veteran is a slightly more challenging version of Normal. In Elite and Ultimate difficulty players will have to face extremely powerful foes while contending with various penalties in exchange for upgraded equipment and the ability to reach the highest experience level of 100. Players must first complete the main story on Normal or Veteran to unlock the higher difficulty modes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Players can also create a Hardcore character who will be permanently deleted if the player dies. Grim Dawn features a single player mode where a player can strike out alone and an online Multiplayer mode where groups of players can team up to save Cairn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
